What are the advantages of polymer tantalum capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are small and large capacitor products with a capacity range from 47 μ F~1000 μ F. Moreover, it has the characteristics of low ESR and high stability, and is called the king of capacitors by engineers. It is especially suitable for applications with high integration and large capacity. In recent years, based on the traditional tantalum capacitors, the new polymer tantalum capacitors have realized an ESR of up to 500KHz and as low as 5m Ω, and can also provide a rated voltage of up to 75V.

So, what are the advantages of polymer tantalum capacitors?

1. Ideal capacitor characteristics

The traditional tantalum capacitor (MnO2 tantalum capacitor) is characterized by low equivalent series resistance (ESR), high ripple suppression ability and long life. It can effectively reduce the ripple voltage in the circuit and does not need to be derated in application. It is very popular with engineers.

Polymer tantalum capacitors, with high conductivity polymer materials as the cathode, have the characteristics of no noise, extremely low equivalent series resistance (ESR), higher ripple suppression ability, and more than ten years of service life, which can effectively suppress the ripple voltage in the circuit.

2. Higher capacity stability

The stability of the capacitance of polymer tantalum capacitor as a function of temperature, voltage and time is higher than that of MLCC. The capacitance value of polymer tantalum capacitor hardly changes at low temperature of - 55 ° C, but its performance at high temperature of 125 ° C is inferior to that of MnO2 capacitor, which can work at high temperature of up to 200 ° C.

3. Very low ESR at high frequency

For MnO2 capacitors, the typical ESR value is 40-50m Ω. This relatively high ESR value is a short plate. In contrast, polymer tantalum capacitors reduce the ESR to less than 5m Ω, so they can be used in applications up to 500KHz.

4. No trade-off between capacity and frequency

When the operating frequency is close to 1MHz, the polymer aluminum electrolytic capacitor can achieve an ESR as low as 2m Ω. This ESR reduction is achieved by compromising the maximum capacitance of the polymer aluminum electrolytic capacitor, and its capacitance value is only 50-80% of that of the polymer tantalum capacitor with the same package size.
